My work is not just about creating gardens, but about creating sacred places. |

Garden as Sacred PlaceWhat is a garden? Peace. Sanctuary. Beauty. Contemplation. Connection. Sound. Smell. A sense of place. What makes a garden? Soil. Sun. Birds and butterflies. Good intentions. Rainfall. Flowers, shrubs, and trees. Color. Structure. Inspiration. Love. Ever since I can remember, I have been in love with nature. My earliest memory was playing in a natural carpet of forget-me-nots and creating fairy homes and gardens in the woods near my home in Gaspé Peninsula, Québec. Along the way, I have created gardens in every home I have lived, and now I create garden places for others. Whenever I approach the design of a garden, I think of my goal as one of soulful placemaking and creating a sacred space, whether it is a garden at a private residence or a communal facility. Throughout history, sacred places have served an important function and were essential to the life of the community. They are places of respite, for interaction with one another or reflection and soul-searching. A garden, ultimately, is meant to encourage interaction and collaboration. Between individuals. Between the self and nature. Gardens help us explore the essence of life and foster personal growth and deepen spiritual awareness. They are places where we engage all our senses, so we can connect with each other, our inner self, and with the goodness of nature. |
